The Nazca Lines

WHAT ARE NAZCA LINES?
Nazca lines are large drawings on the surface of the Nazca desert situated in the southern part of Peruthe Nazca lines are dated back to thousands of years. The Nazca lines were designated as UNESCO world heritage site in1994.The barren land stretches between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, four hundred kilometres from the capital city of Lima.Scholars believe that the Nazca lines were created by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE.The figures vary in terms of complexity, size, nd structure. Some seventy of these lines are zoomorphic designs of animals birds, fish, monkeys and human figures.Other designs include phytomorphic shapes such as trees and flowers.

The designs are nothing but shallow white lines uncovered by removing the red pebbles on the surface of the desert. The largest figures are up to 370m long.Scholars interpret differently about the Nazca lines, but generally, they all come to the same conclusion of these lines being a religious significance to the Nazca culture.

PURPOSE:
Archaeologists, ethnologists, and anthropologists have concentrated the old Nazca culture to attempt to decide the reason for the lines and figures. One theory is that the Nazca individuals made them be seen by their divine beings in the sky. Kosok and Reiche propelled a reason identified with space science and cosmology: the lines were proposed to go about as a sort of an observatory, to indicate the spots on the far-off skyline where the sun and other divine bodies rose or set in the solstices. Numerous ancient indigenous societies in the Americas and somewhere else built earthworks that joined such galactic locating with their religious cosmology, as did the later Mississippian culture at Cahokia in the present-day United States. Another illustration is Stonehenge in England.

EXPLANATIONS:
Other theories were that the geometric lines could indicate the flow of water, irrigation schemes, or be a part of rituals to "summon" water. The spiders, birds and plants may be fertility symbols. It has also been theorised that the lines could act as an astronomical calendar.

Phyllis Pitluga, a senior astronomer at the Adler Planetarium and a protégé of Reiche, performed computer-aided studies of star alignments. She asserted the giant spider figure is an anamorphic diagram of the constellation Orion. She further suggested that three of the straight lines leading to the figure were used to track the changing declinations of the three stars of Orion's Belt. In a critique of her analysis, Dr Anthony F. Aveni noted she did not account for the other 12 lines of the figure. He commented generally on her conclusions, saying:

I really had trouble finding good evidence to back up what she contended. Pitluga never laid out the criteria for selecting the lines she chose to measure, nor did she pay much attention to the archaeological data Clarkson and Silverman had unearthed. Her case did little justice to other information about the coastal cultures, save applying, with subtle contortions, Urton's representations of constellations from the highlands. As historian Jacquetta Hawkes might ask: was she getting the pampa she desired?

Jim Woodmann theorised that the Nazca lines could not have been made without some form of manned flight to see the figures properly. Based on his study of available technology, he suggests a hot-air balloon was the only possible means of flight. To test this hypothesis, Woodman made a hot-air balloon using materials and techniques he understood to have been available to the Nazca people. The balloon flew, after a fashion. Most scholars have rejected Woodman's thesis as ad hoc because of the lack of any evidence of such balloons.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS:
Individuals attempting to safeguard the Nazca Lines are worried about dangers of contamination and disintegration brought on by deforestation in the district.

The Lines themselves are shallow, they are just 10 to 30 cm profound and could be washed away... Nazca has just ever gotten a little measure of rain. In any case, now there are awesome changes to the climate everywhere throughout the world. The Lines can't avoid substantial rain without being harmed.

In the wake of flooding and mudslides in the territory in mid-February 2007, Mario Olaechea Aquije, an archaeological inhabitant from Peru's National Institute of Culture, and a group of experts studied the region. He stated, "The mudslides and substantial downpours did not seem to have made any critical harm the Nazca Lines", however, the adjacent Southern Pan-American Highway suffered harm, and "the harm done to the streets ought to fill in as a suggestion to exactly how delicate these figures are."

In 2013, hardware utilised as a part of a limestone quarry was accounted for to have decimated a little segment of a line and made harm another.

In December 2014, Greenpeace activists unsalvageably harmed the Nazca Lines while setting up a flag inside the lines of one of the well-known geoglyphs. The activists harmed a range around the hummingbird by pounding rocks into the sandy soil. Access to the range around the lines is entirely precluded and exceptional shoes must be worn to abstain from harming the UN World Heritage site. Greenpeace guaranteed the activists were "completely cautious to ensure the Nazca lines,"however this is repudiated by video and photos demonstrating the activists wearing customary shoes (i.e. not exceptional defensive shoes) while strolling on the site.apologized to the Peruvian people, yet Loise Jamie Castillo, Peru's Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage, called the statement of regret "a joke", since Greenpeace declined to distinguish the vandals or acknowledge responsibility. Culture Minister Diana Alvarez-Calderon said that proof assembled amid an examination by the administration would be utilised as a component of a lawful suit against Greenpeace. "The harm done is unsalvageable and the conciliatory sentiments offered by the natural gathering aren't sufficient," she said at a news conference. This likewise guided regard for other harm to geoglyphs outside of the World Heritage region brought about in 2012 and 2013 by the Dakar Rally.

THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE

THE TRIANGLE OF MYSTERIES

The Bermuda triangle also called the Devil's  triangle by some, is a slackly defined triangular region in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the 'Triangle of doom' where numerous amounts of ships and air-crafts have disappeared in the past and that too under obscure circumstances. The vicinity of the Bermuda Triangle is one of the most traversed ship routes in the world, with ships frequently travelling through it to reach European, American and Caribbean ports.

THE BOUNDARIES

Vincent Gaddi, the American author who invented the concept of Bermuda triangle, told in the Pulp magazine the exact boundaries of the Bermuda triangle. As per Mr. Gaddis, there are three vertices; one in Miami, the second one in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the third one in Bermuda.Subsequent authors didn't necessarily follow these boundaries. Some other authors even gave new boundaries and area size of the triangle ranging from 1300000 to 3900000 sq kilometres.

THE BEGINNING OF PROMINENCE

The earliest suggestion of disappearances dates back to 1950 when an article was published in the Miami Herald by Edward Van Winkle Jones. Two years later the fate magazine also wrote about an incident involving the disappearance of flight 19, a group of five U.S. Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers on a training mission. The others followed with their own works concentrating more on Gaddi's idea:John Wallace Spencer(Limbo of the Lost,1969,repr 1973),Charles Berlitz(the Bermuda Triangle,1974);Richard Winer (The Devil's Triangle 1974), all mainly concentrating on super natural elements.

CRITICS

Lawrence David Kusche, author of the Bermuda Triangle mystery argued that many claims of Gaddis and subsequent authors were dubious and false. Kusche's study revealed that there are many inaccuracies in the data provided by Berlitz. The information provided by Berlitz in his books and what the eyewitness, participants and others involved in the incidents were not matching.Kusch noted that some important information also went unreported for eg. the disappearance of the around the world yachtsman Donald Crowhurst which Berlitz depicted as the mystery was on the contrary, having a clear evidence.Kusch also stated that a lot of incidents told by the authors happened actually outside the Bermuda triangle.

CONCLUSION

The number of ships that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle was significantly not greater than the ships disappearing in any other part of the ocean.Further studies proved that in an area frequently pay a call such incidents of mysterious disappearances would not be so mysterious.Berlitz also failed to mention the incidents happening in calm conditions. The numbers have been exaggerated by a sloppy research, some incidents never happened.

Thus the Bermuda Triangle Mystery is just a manufactured myth
